Paul Cederna, MD

President

Dr. Paul S. Cederna is the Robert Oneal Professor of Plastic Surgery, Chief of the Section of Plastic Surgery, and Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan who specializes in reconstruction of complex wounds. Academically, Dr. Cederna has a very active research enterprise directing the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cederna has received over $45,000,000 in direct research funding, authored over 400 scientific manuscripts, published 31 book chapters, and presented his work over 900 times at national and international meetings. He has received over 75 national research awards either as author or mentor of the reseach work. Dr. Cederna has been the Chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Research Council, President of the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, and President for the Plastic Surgery Foundation. He is currently the Vice-Chairman of the ACGME Plastic Surgery RRC and Vice-President of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.

Tod Borton, CEO

Chief Executive Officer

Tod Borton is a Senior Executive with proven leadership in business, product, and quality system development, GMP operations, engineering, and manufacturing experience in the medical device and biotechnology industries. Tod has received five patents and developed many products from concept to commercial success. Companies include Pall Corporation, Terumo Cardiovascular, and Aastrom Biosciences. For the last 10 years, as Founder and President, Tod has run a successful international consulting business assisting medical device companies remediate FDA related concerns and more. During his tenure in consulting, the companies Tod worked with included Johnson & Johnson, Pentax, Cook Medical, STAR Surgical, and ILC Dover. Tod’s consulting career was diverse and included the design and creation of an intraocular lens manufacturing facility in Switzerland.

Tod started his career as a manufacturing technician of a medical device company and quickly moved into product development, management, and executive levels. Tod has an Associate degree in Robotics, a Bachelor of Science degree in Plastics Technology and continued his education with numerous finance, marketing, and business training courses.

Alex Vaskov, PhD

Chief Technology Officer

Alex Vaskov is a founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Blue Arbor Technologies. He has over 7 years of experience researching and developing implantable neural interfaces for prosthetic hand control. His PhD and postdoctoral research focused on the development and clinical testing of real-time control algorithms to interpret peripheral nerve and muscle signals into prosthetic movement commands, designing power efficient embedded systems to clinically translate this technology, and regulatory management for our early-feasibility IDE study. Prior to graduate school, Alex was a software development consultant at Accenture. Alex received his PhD in robotics from the University of Michigan and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Theodore Kung, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Theodore Kung is a board-certified Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kung is the co-Program Director of the Michigan Medicine Plastic Surgery Microsurgery Fellowship and specializes in microsurgical reconstruction to address functional and aesthetic challenges following cancer surgery, extremity trauma, and nerve injury. His clinical practice includes neuroma surgery, extremity salvage, autologous breast reconstruction, and lymphedema surgery. Dr. Kung’s laboratory research was instrumental in the development of the Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) to facilitate intuitive prosthetic control, mitigate postamputation pain, and provide sensory feedback. His clinical research endeavors have been funded by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the National Institutes of Health, the Plastic Surgery Foundation, and the Department of Defense. He is the principal investigator three on prospective studies evaluating the role of RPNI surgery in treating and preventing neuroma pain and phantom limb pain after amputation injury. Dr. Kung is also actively involved in basic science investigations focusing on peripheral nerve injury, repair, and reinnervation through the University of Michigan Neuromuscular Laboratory.
